In the Lord of the Flies William Golding manages to display the boys slow descent into savagery as democracy on the island diminishes In the beginning Jack and Ralph managed to get along but as civilization collapses they become bitter enemies Many of the biguns on the island brutally torment the littluns and cause destruction but only to a certain extent that is until order turns to complete chaos Finally the task of finding pigs and the beast slowly transforms from a game to a desire to hunt and kill which is where civilization and democracy totally diminishes and society becomes chaotic At the beginning Ralph and Jack manage to get along extremely well but as time passes on the island their relationship changes dramatically as civilization collapses Jack shared his burden and there was an invisible light of friendship between the boys At first Jack indicates I agree with Ralph weve got to have rules and obey them This shows us that just like Ralph Jack wants to uphold a civilized society which is represented by the conch This democratic society does not last long as the children have a complete lack of respect for the conch and what it represents law and order Jack decides We dont need the conch anymore we know who should say things As the conch represents democracy we can see that it is breaking up and savagery is starting to take over Golding has made the two boys act similar in the beginning to show us how childish and innocent they are This demonstrates Goldings view that anyone can be overruled by power and become savage when civilization collapses As the ruthless biguns torment the littluns by destroying their sandcastles and cause destruction to the order that Ralph establishes they can still hear in their heads the adult voices of the civilization they have left behind Roger throws rocks at Henry but he throws them so they miss
