Maryellen Shpak LeadershipDr Todd Twelve OClock High - Leadership Under Fire In his book On Leadership John Gardner defines the term as the process or example by which an individual or leadership team induces a group to pursue objectives held by the leader or shared by the leader and his followers In the film Twelve OClock High Gregory Peck plays General Frank Savage He obviously has previous traits and career successes that resulted in his lofty position of general However I cannot help but wonder if his strong leadership qualities were inherent in his personality or if the onset of World War II initiated those characteristics to come forth in such a brilliant manner The military environment that he was part of fostered and enhanced the many valuable traits he possessed The beginning of World War II provided the perfect backdrop for these actions to be used to their best advantage Although without a war he obviously was a success in his military career the values he espoused would perhaps not be so obvious nor welcomed in the business world or in society at large The qualities for a leader during wartime are different in many ways than the behaviors illustrated by other thriving leaders during times of peace I agree with Gardner when he states that the setting or circumstances and the combination of appropriate qualities to lead in that context create a positive result Military society values behaviors that influence their followers and create conditions wherein the members will respect and follow the commands of their superiors The traits of a winning leader in a military organization include fearlessness decisiveness good judgement vitality possession loyalty and being able to inspire their followers Gregory Peck as Frank Savage had all of these qualities and more Upon his arrival at the 918th Savage sees that discipline and morale are extremely poor The unit has the reputation of being a
