Victims of Prejudice Prejudice has caused the pain and suffering of others for many centuries In To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee a system of segregation between blacks and whites is in force Along with blacks other groups of people are judged unfairly just because of their differences Those who associate with black people are also considered inferior People judged unfairly because of their skin colour They are also discriminated because of they way they choose to live their lives The white people are also against people who protected minorities The prejudice and discrimination in society causes the victimization of minorities Segregation exists in the town of Maycomb based on skin colour During the Tom Robinson trial black people in the town must sit up in the balcony while the white people are to sit below them Tom Robinson is a man who is wrongfully accused for raping Bob Ewells daughter Mayella Tom is found guilty by the jury in his case against the Ewells which is a direct result of a racist community He does not get a fair chance in the trial even though that the evidence clearly proves his innocence It was the Ewells who are caucasian against Tom Robinson a negro The jurys decision proves one sad and biased reality of Atticus Finchs statement regarding Maycomb Countys justice system In our courts when its a white mans word against a black mans the white man always wins Theyre ugly but those are the facts of lifep 223 Despite the jurys doubts pertaining to the Ewells accusations against an innocent black man and their knowledge of Toms character they find in favour of Mayella because she is white They do not allow Mayellas accusations to go unanswered because doing so would equalize the two races There is no justice or mercy for a Negro even one as upstanding as Tom Robinson Atticus states this point
