Vietnamese history begins in 208 BC with the breaking of a small region of southern China by the Chinese warlord Trieu Da Trieu Da broke away from the Chinese Chin emperor and expanded his territory as far south as present day Danang This land became known as Nam Viet meaning land of the Southern Viets From this time Nam Viet was a self- governed province within the Chinese empire with Trieu Das lords watching over the lands affairs However about one hundred years later the defining characteristic of Vietnam began as colonial interests by outsiders rose for the country of great natural resources For the next two millennia the Viets against all odds would be forced to fight for their own self-determination against nations of great military and economic prosperity which would prove to be a struggle of great magnitude Leading up to the mid twentieth century Vietnam had become a country defined by its determination to be an independent and patriotic self-governed nation free from the unquenchable desires of the rest of the world More precisely Vietnams nationalistic and patriotic history for the survival and well being if its country during the events leading up to 1954 can be attributed by foreign interests of colonialization in Vietnam in addition to American global anti-Communist sentiments Viet struggle for self-rule began in 111 BC as the powerful Han dynasty of China began its goals of unifying the provinces of China This included an expedition led by Wu-Ti to Nam Viet that would result in its conquer and absorption into the Chinese colonial domination for the next millennium This period of Chinese rule greatly influenced the development of Vietnamese culture and especially its goals of a distinct Vietnamese identity During this time of long colonial rule the Viets adopted many Chinese social and political values The Viets thought to be blessed by the Chinese influences in civilization but always resented Chinese political involvement and Chinese attempts
