Toronto Symphony Orchestra Rehearsal Response Tchaikovsys Symphony No 4 Maria Alsop conductor Jessica Linnebach violin Barber Essay No 2 Mozart Violin Concerto No 5 Tchaikovsky Symphony No 4 On Wed March 6 2001 I went to Roy Thomas Hall to listen in on a rehearsal of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra TSO This would be my second time in a week to go and listen to them rehearse and I was looking forward to hearing new repertoire in this one Mr P prepped my theory majors class my letting us listen to Tchaikovskys Symphony No 4 and reading the mini scores along with it So we were all believe it or not excited to hear it performed and not have to read the mini-scores Because of this I waited for this trip to use to do my review on and respond on what I saw and heard at this rehearsal because I was more prepared mentally for it As we sat down the orchestra was already seated and warming up I saw that the guest conductor Maria Alsop was already there explaining the long trip that their guest soloist Jessica Linnebach had taken to get there that morning Due to the storm she had missed the previous afternoon rehearsal so the orchestra as wel l as we were to get to hear her play for the first time From what I remember from Mr P she was 17 years old so the same age as many of us and had been playing professionally since she was 7 She was obviously very dedicated to music and u could tell her professionalism as she walked onto the stage I knew this rehearsal was bound to be VERY different from last weeks and was really glad for it The first piece they played was Barbers Second Essay for Orchestra I had never heard this piece before but I was absolute entranced by
