Violence can not be dealt with by more violence or so our parents tell us Sadly as children we do not believe this In our minds the only way for us to stop a bully is to stand up for ourselves Sticks and Stones by Nicole Ball is an example of how violence does not solve our problems Someone like James Nichols lurks in every school He is envious and hateful of others In order for him to make himself feel worthy he bullies someone else trying to make them feel like the outcast In this case it was Nicole and her brother Greg Any person that has been bullied tries to put up with it for as long as he or she can The lucky ones move to a new school Some hide and a few stand up for themselves Nicole and her brother tolerated James for as long as they could but one morning James took his taunting too far It was no longer words he was throwing at them he tapped her brother on the head with a drumstick emphasizing every syllable of his hateful words Beyond reason Nicole attacks James shrieking and striking out James retaliates with Shut up bitch Stunned at his language Nicole returns to her seat resolved to do as her parents told her and ignore him Only a swift movement causes her to look up and see Greg slam James into the aisle and launch two punches into his face Even so fighting James did not stop his bullying He continued to harass Nicole and her brother threatening them with a knife Although Nicole and Greg went against their parents advise two good things came from retaliating against James Nicole discovered how deeply her brother respected her and her parents eyes opened to the hell riding that bus each day presented for their children For Nicole and Greg while the bully lived on their plight was
