When will gays be seen as equal Gays do not have the right to openly declare their sexual orientation in the military If they do they can be subject to deprivation of privileges assault or they can even be thrown out Although seventy percent of Americans support gays in the military homosexuals still do not have the same rights as heterosexuals If gays that are in the military openly declare their sexual orientation they can be deprived of privileges In cooperation of President Clintons dont ask dont tell policy troops arent obligated to openly declare their sexual orientation But if they do they can receive consequences One consequence is that they can be segregated from the barracks or even the base Reasoning for this is to prevent any anti-gay violence or any other disruptive behavior Another consequence is that they can be kept from becoming front-line combat troops An official who agreed to be interviewed by the Baltimore Sun only if his identity was not disclosed justifies this by saying If a person thinks it is more important that he identify himself as a homosexual than to think about the solidarity of his unit then we dont want him Hes said right then I dont give a damn what the effect is on the people in my unit Another consequence is that when people find out about gays it sometimes causes anti-gay violence In other words if you come out you could be beaten or even killed An example is where Alan Schindler was suspended from his ship because of a rumor of him coming out Then as rumor carried he was stomped to death by two fellow officers They didnt even know if the rumor was a fact He could have been just like them You can also be thrown out for declaring your sexuality Joe Steffan was thrown out a week before his graduation from his graduation from his military
