Part 3 Readers Log By Tyler Seib The last part of the book is the most fascinating Winston finds out that OBrien is working for the party but Winston knew that the whole time OBrien begins his punishment and correction on Winston Winston cannot stop the torture or psychological control OBrien gains from torturing him and when the guard smashes his elbow he thinks that nothing in the world is worse than physical pain Winstons obsession with OBrien which began with the dream about the place where there is no darkness was the source of his undoing and it undoes him now as well Throughout the torture sessions Winston becomes increasingly eager to believe anything OBrien tells him even Party slogans Winston even begins to dream about OBrien in the same way he now dreams about his mother and Julia Winstons will is shattered after months of agonizing torture and unrelenting brainwashing Winston is nevertheless able to hold on to his love for Julia until Chapter 5 when OBrien threatens him with the cage of rats At this point Winston is finally faced with a torment he would rather see Julia experience than feel it himself and he calls out her name to save himself Once he has offered Julia to take his place Winston is finally destroyed The point of torturing Winstons is to brain wash him and send him into the world By torturing him they take the fight right out of him By making Winston realize he cannot win makes him accept the partys views Long ago in Chapter 7 part 1 Winston wrote in his diary Freedom is the freedom to say that two plus two make four If that is granted all the rest follows Now after his time in the Ministry of Love Winstons mind and will have been broken he idly traces 225 in the
