Writing Across the Curriculum There exists a dereliction in todays centers for higher education An increasing number of graduates from Americas universities are embarking on maiden voyages into the work force with an inadequate education As universities become more field specific the big three reading writing and arithmetic play a lesser role in the curriculum of the centers of higher education Administrators revise the core curriculum to contain fewer and fewer general education classes For example the South Dakota State University Bulletin for 1994 - 1996 lists the general education core requirements The board of regents of South Dakota requires only six credits of composition and three credits of mathematics 17 Only nine required credits out of 128 needed to graduate consist of the big three That represents less than eight percent of the total needed to graduate This type of minimization of the foundation of curriculum in Americas centers of higher education represents a serious threat to the well-being of post-secondary educational curriculum Administrators of universities that employ this sort of degradation of the big three are relying too much on the education college freshman are to supposed have received in their senior year of high school which all to often is grotesquely inadequate The result of this absence of a complete education is that more high school seniors are evolving into college freshman and inflicting their educational nievety upon a universitys graduate assistants whom are all too often over-worked and underpaid To help alleviate some of the pressure placed upon the students faculty and administration centers of higher education are experimenting with different models of alternate education Universities are employing larger numbers of adjunct faculty larger numbers of graduate assistants and modifying their curriculum They are using Freshman Composition as a foundation for subsequent composition classes Many universities are trying something a little differentwriting across the curriculum Writing across the curriculum is a topic of great interest in Americas
