Was Pac-Man a violent video game Some would argue that it was Not because Pac-Man went around gobbling up little white dots but because the games title character engages in a violent act of eating ghosts Jones 2001 Just about anyone who has played this game would agree that this quote is fairly comical Pac-Man certainly does not strike one as being a violent video game most people would probably consider it to be a harmless light-hearted form of entertainment Unfortunately many children and parents have adopted a similar perspective towards todays video games many of which make Pac-Man look like a veritable angel in comparison Second only in popularity to television video games have been a part of popular culture for decades and their increasingly violent subject matter is a significant factor in the rise of violent behaviour amongst the children of today Of all the studies that have looked at the correlation between video game violence and aggressive behavior the relationship has consistently been strongest amongst elementary-age children Selecky 2000 Why is this Children young ones especially are very impressionable It is not uncommon for them to imitate actions theyve seen in the media video games being no exception Researchers found that in a group of 5 to 7 year olds children imitated during free play what they had just prior been exposed to in video games Schutte 1988 This finding now over 10 years old does not even begin to take into account the realism of todays games that makes it even more likely that a child will imitate an action that he or she has just played in a game Ruskin 2001 It must be noted however that the studies on the effects of video games to date have been far from conclusive Not only do many studies fail to demonstrate the long-term effects of violent video games many fail to use relevant games in their research Professor John Sherry of
