UNMASKING THE KLAN Do the members of the Ku Klux Klan have the right to march down the street while protecting their identities with masks and gowns or do the members of the public have the right to know whos behind the masks Since the early 1900s Klan members have worn special ceremonial robes to protect their identities while they venture out Todays society feels that anti-masking laws should be passed so the members of the Ku Klux Klan can be exposed It is noted that 18 states have anti-masking laws that make it a crime to wear a mask in public These laws were passed in reaction to all the violence put forth by the Klan Many questions have been asked about these laws Are these laws aimed for the exposure of the Klan members to the public or are they denying the members of the Ku Klux Klan members First Amendment rights There have been many arguments made by the Ku Klux Klan and many more arguments made by society as we know it The Ku Klux Klan members feel that their First Amendment rights were being violated First Amendment Under the first amendment man has the right to freedom of speech right to express oneself in private or public freedom of press right to have newspapers magazines and news be reported to the public freedom of religion right to practice different religions and freedom to assemble right to gather in a group or organizes in groups The Ku Klux members stated that they wore masks so they did not have to face harassment or lose of their job because of their belief In Supreme Court cases they found that Its the First Amendment right to remain anonymous and that is exactly what the Ku Klux Klan members are doing They are trying to remain anonymous As for the argument made by society anti-masking laws should be legal
