Imagine you have just found out you are going to die within threemonths Recently the questions have been changed from What am I going to do with therest of my life to When should I kill myself With painful and crippling diseasessuch as AIDS and cancer and Alzheimers along with doctors such as Dr Kavorkian somepeople are choosing death over life Doctor assisted suicide has been a very controversialsubject in the past few years Some states such as Oregon have passed laws which allowdoctors to prescribe lethal drugs to patients who have less than six months to liveHendin 1 Other states have taken the opposite side I believe that if you are able toreason and think rationally you should decide whether to live or die If not the peoplewho know you best should make the decision If you are ever in a situation where you know you will soon die thechoice whether or not to kill yourself should be your own I believe that doctor-assistedsuicide should not be controlled by the government but should be a personal choice basedon the individual Many people could not imagine living in a hospital bed for theremainder of their lives They would rather die with dignity then live out the rest oftheir life dependent on others The government thinks that they know what is best for thepeople If everyone is an individual how can the government know what is best foreveryone If feel that people should make up their own minds about what is best for themJoshua Haney wrote an article on assisted suicide He says Everyday we make choicesthat decide our fate and future We choose where we work what we eat and drink etc Thisis just one more choice that we are making If we take away this right from people we aretaking steps towards taking away other rights Would it be morally right to allow thatperson to suffer in pain in anguish through
