Critically consider the claim that sociology is a science of societyAccording to Giddens and Sutton 2013 4 sociology is a subject which looks at the scientific study of human life social groups whole societies and the human world As a social science sociology uses a variety of methods which demonstrates critical analysis and practical investigation in order to develop deeper understanding about the social actions of individuals and the functioning of society This essay will argue that sociology is a science of society as it helps individuals to develop a critical analysis and deeper understanding about how societies are structured and how it has an impact on their everyday lives As a result individuals develop a way of thinking about their lives contextually which establishes a relationship between the individual and the society they live in smaller scale relationships are connected to larger scale relationships and the totality of this is society itselfSociology is viewed as a scientific discipline of society as it involves logical methods of practical investigation critical analysis of data and the assessment of theoretical perspectives in relation to societies and individuals Contrasting to sciences such as physics sociology requires studying ourselves as individuals which could have the possibility of challenging our perspectives in society As part of studying individuals and societies sociologists apply their theoretical perspective in order to use and answer sociological questions This is by demonstrating ethnographic methods which will help them actively participate in different communities groups and institutions In order to study society systematically sociologists such as Comte Durkheim Weber and Marx also known as the founders of sociology examine the social structures which arranges society and the social problems which challenges society As a result sociologists have developed systematic and scientific techniques of gaining an insight into the social and natural worlds which could possibly confront conventional views in todays modern society Without the use of theoretical perspectives sociologists would not be able to construct
