The End of an Era The halls of Indiana University will now be absent of the ranting and raving of the great Bobby Knight The legendary coach was released September 10 2000 after freshmen Kent Harvey made accusations that Knight grabbed and berated him Knight was on a zero-tolerance policy for the choking of a player in a practice a few years ago The firing of the Knight has caused uproar on and off the courts of Indiana with player like guard Dane Fife announcing he is leaving the team because of knights dismissal and student waving posters that bore the words Wanted Dead and a picture of Harvey Since that night legions of knights defenders from across the state came to defend who in their mind is one of the greatest coach in history There were plenty of tears Sunday --- inside knights meeting with his team as well as on campus Former student players and fans were sharing thoughts and memories of the head Hoosier hoopster At a press conference where the university president Myles Brand was speaking of the matter Indiana player stood at the back of the room along the wall glaring and some wiping away tears Forward Kirk Haston was quoted saying This is like a loss in the family a feeling that was felt though out the school and the state of Indiana when the university administration fired Indiana most successful coach Success is the reason Knight has so many followers A man with such a passion for the game he often allowed his temper to get out of control Yet with all the outbreaks he has managed to run one of the cleanest programs in the country for 28 seasons In 28 seasons he has a 98 graduation rate among student who stayed four years a stat that is more important then any outburst Unfortunately academic success is over looked and winning games is now
