Katniss Everdeen a sixteen year old girl lived with her mother and little sister Prim Katniss courageously volunteered in her sisters place on the day of the Reaping for the Hunger games The Hunger Games was an event that took place every year where one boy and one girl of the ages between twelve and eighteen were randomly selected from each of the twelve districts to compete in the gladiatorial event to fight to the death Katniss heroically saved her country from the Dark Ages it had been through for more than seventy five yearsKatniss came from the people of District 12 District 12 specialized in coal mining It remained the farthest from the large rich city known as the Capitol It is guessed to have been located in the Appalachian Mountains in North America The district was split into two different social classes one known as The Seam and the other the Square The country District 12 was located in was known as Panem Panem was the country that had risen from the ashes of the post-apocalyptic North America Its place of power and utopian city was the Capitol located in the Rocky Mountains Panem consisted of twelve districts outside of the Capitol Each one had a specialty in which the people worked in The life in Panem for Katniss as well as many others was a cruel and harsh environment Katnisss ancestors were most likely those who lived in North America around the state of Kentucky Her parents names were unknown but her father died in an underground mine explosion when Katniss was only eleven Her mother was always in a deep depression stage that often brought down the mood of Prim Katniss and Prim dreamed about their father very often and would sometimes wake up screaming It was a rough life for the Everdeens and
