Over the last fifty years womens lives have changed for all types of reasons some for good and some for bad The book shows us the changes When Katia was 17 her father chose her husband and they moved to Australia away from her family and friends Francesco didnt really care for Katia or how she felt he didnt really love her In Katias times you could only have sex when you were married When Francesco was away in the cane fields Katia met a man named Marcus Sandford he cared for Katia and he did love her Marcus saw Katia on many occasions they fell in love and they had a baby together When Francesco found out we was furious but Katia found out that Francesco had the mumps and he was infertile so they kept a secret Katia stayed with Francesco to protect Christina When Christina was 17 she fell in love with the boy that lived next door They fell in Love and Christina ended up becoming pregnant with Josephine All Christina wanted was to be with a man who didnt necessarily have money but loved her and took care of her The man ended up being Michael Andretti the boy next door When Francesco found out he threw Christina out of the house All of the family disowned Christina and Josephine because Christina had a baby without being married When Francesco died the family took Christina back again Christina had to bring Josephine up all by herself they went through some hard times by themselves When Josephine was 17 she found her emancipation She became an item with Jacob Coote Cook highs Captain but really she had a crush with St Anthonys Captain John Barton The problem for John and Josie was that Josie was from the middle class group and John was from the upper class Johns problem is that his Dad wants him to
