Thesis Walty and Seaver warn that when a society fails to take care of those who served it dehumanization and alienation will be the ultimate consequencesWeltys and Seavers written experience in nursing homes show how once a person ceases to become useful to society one becomes an outcast and a schism forms between the two An example of this is shown when Marian has to remove her mittens in order to open the heavy front door The door represents the schism that has formed between society and the elderly Also the fact that the nursing home is on the outskirts of the town also represents the gap between these seniors and civilization Furthermore any senior that is too old to work or control his bowels is shoved into a senior home He has been alienated by society even after he used to own a multi-million dollar company which most likely benefitted society by creating jobs In the end they were never anything-only hereWelty and Seaver show how once society deems an individual as a burden one loses ones humanity and is seen as nothing more than an animal This is most obviously seen throughout the short story with animal imagery related to the two old ladies For example the old ladies are first attributed with a sheep bleating Through this quote Welty may be saying that once these seniors are old enough and put into this nursing home they do nothing more than just eat and sleep- just like sheep Addie one of the old ladies that Marian meets is also significant in that Addies very name is very similar to adder which is a snake further showing the animal imagery This illustrates how the very women are viewed as animals In Seavers case the residents are treated like animals For example they have no control over their own life and all they can do is sit around and wait for food They also
