The Chitimacha are one of the most interesting Native Tribes The Chitimacha were first established in the mid 1600s They have been moved from different parts of the country and are now back were they first settled In this paper I will write about their belief values economic family and political institutions of the society The Chitimacha civilization sprang up along Bayou Atchafalaya and in the shores of Lake Chitimacha Grand Lake As the tribes numbers increased they spread out across the delta region developing a High Civilization long before European explorers entered the New World Quebec There are said to be four great sacred trees in the Chitimacha world one at the mouth of the Mississippi one somewhere over east on the seashore one at the entrance of Vermilion bay and one at Hi pinimc on Grand Lake In this land abundant with resources the Chitimachians were known as skilled fisherman hunters and accomplished farmers And as the most highly skilled basket makers in the North American Wild cane gathered from the swamps was split by the teeth of the basket makers dyed in vivid yellows reds and black and woven into layers producing beautifully intricate basket of unique designs capable of holding water Quebec Throughout successive centuries the Chitimacha Nations population grew to between 3000 and 4000 people in an area which encompassed most of the lower Mississippi Delta and the Atchafalaya Basin Before the French established colonies along the lower Mississippi River Valley fifteen village communities were in place throughout the region spreading the distinctive Chitimacha language and culture Harrison The Chitimacha lived in peace and tranquillity for hundreds of years Then in the early 1700s marauding bands of heavily armed Frenchman often allied with the Acolapissa and other tribes began slaving raids that touched
