Examine the Impact of Mikhail Gorbechev on both the USSR and Europe between 1985-1990 Considered a key figure in the liberalization and subsequent disintegration of Soviet and Eastern European Communism Mikhail Gorbachev had definitely a substantial impact on the status of the USSR and Europe during his time as the last leader of the USSR However it would seem that much of his contributions are accidental rather than planned actions The fact that he was trying to actually renew the vigor of the Soviet Union when he destroyed it is seemingly of only a coincidental factor His policies were intended to help the Soviet Union and in increasing consternation he had seen it hinder the USSR until the point of breakup It is definitely Gorbachevs policies both foreign and ones that enacted in the USSR which were the major actions taken by him and therefore was his major impact on Europe and the Soviet Union In the Soviet Union where the majority of his efforts lay he exercised his power in various forms One of his major concerns was political reform In the communistic system he reformed the election process The constitution was amended to provide that elections of new 2250 member Congress of Peoples Deputies which was to replace the old Supreme Soviet The elections to this committee was held during March and April of 1989 It would seem to symbolize that the Soviet Union is straying from the paths of Communism and more into a role fit for democracy This is backed up by the fact that this was the first competitive elections held in the Soviet Union ever since its founding in 1922 And thus the party that was selected to be on this committee elected a Supreme Soviet which un like its ancestor actually had real legislative abilities The Supreme Soviet elected Gorbachev to be the chairman in May Under Gorbachev elections of the democratic persuasion
