Question 1 Explain Menos argument and explain Socrates response Is his reply successful Why or Why not So Socrates give a few counter-arguments to Meno about why we should inquire into things that we do not know First he tells a myth about the soul and its immortality and how it has learned everything and recollect is all we need to do to obtain that knowledge Second since Meno doesnt quite understand the theory of recollection he goes on to give an example of how it works by having a little geometry discussion with one of Menos servants Third Socrates shows that inquiry sometimes brings us to a state where we dont know things that we previously thought that we did a state of ignorance and from there we want to get out of the ignorant state and obtain knowledge If we never inquired in the first place we would still think that we know when we dont know and there would be no need for inquiry Socrates is saying that inquiry helps us find out what we really do now and helps us obtain what we dont know when we discover what we dont know Inquiry can only help us know more Socrates second counter-argument to Meno is his theory of recollection and that is as follows that everybodys soul is immortal and has learned everything In our present states we dont remember everything that our soul knows so we have to try and remember recollect This is done by asking questions and inquiring into matters Socrates also thinks that we have certain true notions about what is right that help us to know when we are on the right track The geometry discussion is lead by Socrates in that he asks the questions and guides the discussion in the way that he wants it to go But even though Socrates is the one asking the questions the boy is the one that
