The American Dream today has become increasingly convoluted due to personal fears and uncertainties that reside deep inside each and every individual even in those too afraid to admit and confront these insecurities due to past personal afflictions resulting from tyrannical rule Now one might be tempted to settle on the notion that the American Dream differs from one person to another a virtual construct fabricated in ones own mind depicting their idea of a utopia A utopia based on personal experience or cultural assertions Another position taken by many prominent writers including Langston Hughes and Maya Angelou renowned for their works on freedom and the American dream is that the American dream is not something fabricated by the individual Rather that the American dream is the freedom to pursue ones goals and aspirations without having the obstacle of overcoming an oppressive majority willfully controlled by the wealthy Two poems in particular share this concept of freedoms relation and importance to the American dream one of them being Let America Be America Again by Langston Hughes and the other Still I Rise by Maya Angelou Although both poems are written in the first person perspective giving you clear insight into the authors thoughts and reasoning the authors agree on the problem yet differ in their approach to addressing and possibly resolving it Maya Angelou has a much more defiant and provocative tone throughout her poem This may be due to the fact that her writing takes place in a later time period than Hughes in particular the civil rights era Langston Hughes on the other hand wrote about the struggles of African Americans during the 1920s his poems played a vital role in shaping what is known as the Harlem Renaissance In doing so he inspired many through his portrayals of black life in America Both poets do however motivate the reader through their use of connotation throughout their poems When comparing Angelou
