To be brutally honest my knowledge of Latin America is embarrassingly shallow In fact the reason there the instructions for this paper put an o in Latin eludes me I do know a little Spanish but none of my friends speak it So the thought of actually using my Spanish for an encounter with a Spanish-speaking stranger is frightening Besides how would that person react to a white girl trying to relate to them I dont even know enough about LatinHispanic persons to understand their world view or how they feel about Caucasians If I dont even know the difference between the terms Hispanic and Latin what is to prevent me from making some terribly offensive mistake when trying out SpanishMy knowledge of Latin America is limited to a few trivial facts Such as Spain conquered South America Spanish immigrants often married indigenous peoples At least one country has a female president and one country enforces 100 eligible voter participation in elections Many sophisticated cultures existed in Latin America before the United States was even born Tacos bright fabrics dark skin colors beautiful women romantic men strange fruits exotic animals and rainforests come to mind easily But nothing of substance and certainly nothing current is there Most of the Latin American information and new the United States gives out is not very forthcoming It mostly contains immigration related things talk of drug wars corrupt and unstable governments and poverty Globalization no doubt a contributes to that poverty Of course globalization certainly has its pluses It surrounds me with a variety of languages foods music and products It makes the world seem like a smaller place for travel and trade But these things are also liabilities The United States has found it increasingly easy to search the globe for people and resources to exploit Latin America has made its mistakes but our search for gold oil and people has stripped it of much profit and
