Moral rules can and are broken where there is a professional exemption granted by society to do so There are numerous examples where an individuals profession either implies or dictates how they should act This can cause the individual to perform tasks or act in a way that goes against moral rules These types of moral dilemmas can occur in a number of professions but are heightened in the fields of law and medicine These professions have human interaction at every level and as such are more inclined to be effected by moral or ethical decisions Doctors police officers and lawyers are constantly placed in situations that test their moral beliefs against their responsibilities to society Police officers for example are sometimes placed into situations where they know perpetrators are acting against the moral rules set by society but are technically within the rules of the law There is a very fine and difficult line for individuals to have the self control to act against their moral rules to uphold professional principles It is also a difficult dilemma whether to employ any means available good or bad as long as the outcome is good Moral rules stipulate that we must all work towards a good end It can then be assumed that we are morally justified in using any means which will achieve a good end But in the professional arena the means do not always justify the end A police officer cannot break the law to obtain a conviction of an individual that may otherwise go free A doctor cannot end a patients life even though they are terminally ill and in extreme pain If any action is morally bad it cannot really serve a good end even though it may on the surface appear to do so Individuals often try to condone their use of violence or deception by saying it is for the social good A good society
