The Battle Of Marston Ai The Royalists made some mistakes before the battle the mistakes were down to Marquis of Newcastle being so lazy Rupert had ordered Newcastle to have his men from the York garrison on the Moor by 6 am but the Marquis himself did not arrive until about 9 am and his troops did not start arriving until 2 pm Rupert was furious - by that time the enemy had built up their forces and arranged themselves in battle order He had lost any advantage over them ii The Royalists also made some mistakes in the battle Firstly the Royalists turned up with a lot fewer men than the Parliamentarians The Royalists could of attacked but they wasted a lot of time just firing their cannons for several hours without doing any damage to the enemy B The turning point of the battle happened soon after 7 pm Rupert decided it was too late for fighting He went to have supper and Newcastle went to smoke his pipe But just half an hour later as a sudden hail and thunderstorm broke the whole Parliamentarian army began to advance They surprised the Royalists overran the ditch and captured 4 cannons Soon the infantry on both sides were fighting fiercely C Rupert was to blame for the defeat because he stopped fighting and assumed that the parliamentarians would not attack He also left the rest of the army unprepared for battle Newcastle was also to blame for the defeat because he turned up late leaving the Parliamentarians with a big advantage 2a The defeat was very bad for the Royalists as they lost over 4000 men compared to the Parliamentarians who only lost about 300 In addition the Royalists had 1500 men taken prisoner 6000 muskets
