Three factors that contrast the differences in voter turnout among groups in America are registration requirements frequency of elections and the nature of political parties Voter turnout is the proportion of people of voting age who can vote in an election Voter turnout has dropped substantially since the 1960s Non-voting is more dominant in the United States than all other democracies Voter turnout in major elections was less than 60 percent in the US compared to 90 percent in Belgium and many other nations There are many citizens in the US that are not eligible to participate in national elections The US ranks the lowest of all other nations There are different reasons that affect the low turnout rate in the United States An important factor that shows how voter turnout in the US is different than other nations is the registration requirements Before any American can vote they must be registered That means they must be on the list of people who are eligible to vote Registration was formed to prevent voters from voting twice in elections Other democracies place the responsibility on the government to decide on how their voting system will work Although they still require registration also Public officials in European nations have the job to enroll citizens on the registration lists In the United States it is only the democracy who gives the individual the responsibility for registering to vote Some states make it harder for citizens to qualify for voting Eligibility is a big problem among voter turnout in the US Citizens in the US have to have legal residency in the same place they are living for a period of time before they are allowed to register to vote These are main factors on how the registering system works in the US and other countries Another main factor that accounts for differences in voter turnout is frequency of elections The frequency of US elections lowers turnout
