Genocide In the Twentieth Century Genocide has been and continues to be a very serious problem for the entire world Time and time again acts of genocide have been committed over the past 100 years The three examples I will use throughout the essay are the Armenians the German Holocaust and the Rwandans I will be comparing similarities of how each horrifying act began and what measures were taken to stop it I will show the racial ethnic and religious reasons behind these genocidal acts Also the economies of these countries were at an all time low which played a key role in the beginning of these acts Although all of these are very important points the main question is figuring out where the responsibility lies with the countries who commit the act or the countries who do nothing to stop these genocidal acts First I believe that the most important and strongest reason for why genocide happens is ethnic discrimination In each example the Armenians the German Holocaust and the Rwandans ethnic discrimination was a key component This similarity is amazing for the fact that the Turks discriminated against the Armenians The Germans discriminated against the Jews and the Hutus over the Tutsis Each of these occurred because the groups which were committing the genocide believed they were superior to the groups being killed off The mere fact that a leader can get an entire ethnic group to believe they are superior to another blows my mind but this is exactly what happened Adolf Hitler used the knowledge of the Turks committing their genocide over the Armenians and he knew the rest of the world did nothing to stop it as long as they said it was war casualties Senecal Spring 2001 So he used this knowledge and called the genocide against the Jewish population casualties of war Night Therefore the rest of the outside world did nothing to stop
