Sadly Barbaras horrific childhood is comparable to most poor neighborhoods around the country After her family moved from South Carolina they lived in a clapboard two story house in Washington DC 25 Her father Maurice was a construction worker during the day and a janitor in the evenings Janey Bell her mother worked as a cook in the evenings Barbara was the third oldest of ten siblings whom she cared for when she was only nine years old Barbara worked diligently on her many chores fruitlessly hoping to win affection Unlike her siblings she wasnt a favorite of either mother or father and was constantly beaten when they lost their short tempers She tried to find a man to rescue her from the violent house but to no avail When she was 26 years old she had two little girls Nanette and Leslie to care for Before Cedric entered the world Barbara made the most important sacrifice for him She saved him from murder Cedrics father Cedric Gilliam wanted Barbara to abort the baby when she told him she was pregnant He had just gotten his life together and he didnt want the baby She believed that the baby was a boy and really wanted to have him Barbara pleaded with Gilliam telling him that if she had another abortion she would be ruined However he gave her an ultimatum either the baby goes or he goes 28 She went to the abortion clinic a couple times but returned with the baby still inside When Cedric was born months later she invested all her dreams in him She quit her secretary job when he was two years old and went on welfare because she wanted to instill the love she was denied She understood the importance of these early years and her role as Cedrics mother Together they bought books made flashcards and spent time with each other She left her needs unfulfilled
