Dr Beatrice Tinsley Beatrice Tinsley overcame many obstacles during her lifetime starting as early as her birth yet still grew to become one of the most significant and creative theoreticians in history She contributed greatly to what scientists today know about the origin of the universe and is has been deamed the title of the Queen of the Cosmos by some She was a gifted and devoted teacher mentor and scientist Her scientific work is quoted by biographer Christine Cole in The Book of New Zealand Women Ko Kui Ma Te Kaupapa as opening doors to the future study of the evolutions of stars galaxies and even the Universe itself Dt Tinsley was born prematurely near the beginning of World War II on January 27 1941 at Richmond Lodge Chester in northwest England She was the second daughter of a father who was an Anglican minister and a mother that was a writer When she was born there was a constant threat of air raids because their location was so near Liverpool and the family was faced with the problems of a premature baby without modern technology Their only heating sources were a portable oil heater and a coal fire The coal however was rationed because of the war and due to the winter weather none could be delivered easily Despite these harsh conditions Tinsley unexpectedly survived After the war the family moved to New Zealand first to Christchurch and then settled in New Plymouth where Beatrices father was mayor for three years At New Plymouth Girls High School she was a brilliant student excelling in mathematics languages writing and music She even played violin for the National Youth Orchestra for two years At the young age of fourteen however she decided that her future was to become and astrophysicist Tinsley graduated from New Plymouth Girls High School at sixteen won a junior scholarship and went
