Equality In 1890 less then one half of one percent of women wereemployed gainfully outside of the home Over the next hundredyears women have not only gained access to jobs outside of thehome but also fought for equality in the work place Thesestruggles have not been easy by any means Women have overcomemany obstacles in there journey into the work force none graterthen the views of their male piers Many males thought andcontinue to think that there is no place for women in the workplace Women made there strides into the work force by not onlyfollowing examples of their courageous pioneers but also bybanding together to show their strength During the mid 1800s a small number of women begin theirassault on what were at the time considered male-only jobsFields such as teaching preaching medicine and law were alljobs domenated by men Women had made some progress in the workforce before the 1850s In the mid nineteenth century womenwere the majority for grade school teachers up from the tenpercent of elementary teachers that were teachers in thecolonial period This can be largely attributed not to the factthat men were more accepting of the idea that women belonged inthe work place but rather men were drown to the higher payingand more socially appreciated managerial jobs brought on by theindustrial revolution School boards did not mind these talentedleaving because they could higher a less qualified women for aslow as one fifth of males salary for the same job Susan B Anthony was the first women to publicly speak outagainst this gross injustice towards women After being fired toreplace a male teacher fired for incompetenceshe was paid onethird of the salary he had receivedReifert 74she went to thestate teachers convention of 1853 to register a protest Afterbeing hushed once and a half hour of debate she was finallyallowed to speak her peace Although nothing became of her firstencounter with the womens movement she quit
