Many newcomers to the United States are forced to work off-the-books in the underground economy either because they do not have legal status or social security cards because they lack work skills or because they prefer a work environment free of paperwork and government intervention While such an arrangement is illegal the government has a difficult time doing anything about it In an underground economy situation your wages wont be subject to withholding Youll be paid in cash but you wont necessarily be any richer since you might be paid at a lower rate Remember too that the parts of your wage withholding applicable to health insurance unemployment insurance and social security are meant to benefit you You wont have any of these benefits if you work for cash off-the-books Taking those matters into consideration many Americans seem to dont care According to the Federal Reserve there is enough currency floating around to make it appear that every American family of four has 6000 or so in cash stashed under the mattress including three dozen 100 bills And despite the extensiveness of credit cards ATMs and electronic transfers the sea of cash has been growing much faster than the nations gross national product So all the health social security and all other benefits really wouldnt really make a difference Theres always going to be a way for Americans and foreigners to get over some way some how But some analysts believe that it is a safety valve to hold communities together John Kretzmann stated Almost everybody has some underground economic activity going on I think its absolutely necessary for peoples survival that they have these activities The saintly of the less fortunate scramble to make ends meet by providing goods and services to those in their community They try to make any extra income Uncle Sam cant tax because hes already taxing the little amount they get from the government Although
