By the 1950s and 1960s James Baldwin was already in his 30s and 40s in age As an African American growing up in Harlem during his time period the main focus of his life was the church It seems by being a member of the church Baldwin felt the sense of community and found an escape from his poor surroundings through the church Having a cruel overbearing step father always made James Baldwin feel the need to try to please him This can be observed when Baldwin gets saved and becomes a preacher at a young age of 14 httpwwwkirjastoscifijbaldwinhtm As an candidly open gay African American racial and sexual prejudices in the United States were a cold hard everyday reality for Baldwin He moved to France to escape the unfair racial oppression he found in the United States Realizing that the state of American race relation was in much distress he later participated in the Civil Rights Movement and became a leading figure in the African American literary tradition James Baldwin wrote about the injustice of racism and gives the readers the sense of effect racism has on the psyche of people both black and white One good example is the short story Going to meet the man Baldwins willingness to help try to improve the state of racism in America is portrayed by a quote he made You write in order to change the world knowing perfectly well that you probably cant but also knowing that literature is indispensable to the world The world changes according to the way people see it and if you alter even by a millimeter the way people look at reality then you can change it httpwwwcp-telnetmillerBilLeequotesBaldwinhtml The African American artists and writers all face similar problems one mutual problem amongst majority of them is that they mostly write regarding African American issues May it be about black culture or politics the subject usually centers on
