Shakespeares Life Significance of Writer William Shakespeare was surely the worlds most performed and admired playwright He was well known in his time and like many artists his fame continues to grow after his death He is in movies in the theater even on TV Whether modernized or set back in Elizabethan times his influence is everywhere in the things we use for our entertainment His plays were given special presentation at the courts of Queen Elizabeth I and King James I more frequently than those of any other coexistent writer Background family and friends William Shakespeare was born on April 23 1564 He was baptized on April 24 1564 in Stratford-upon-Avon Warwickshire He was the third of eight children born to John Shakespeare and Mary Arden three of whom died in childhood John was a well-known merchant and Mary was the daughter of a Roman Catholic member of the gentry or high social position In 1582 after his school years ended he married Anne Hathaway She was the daughter of a farmer It is said that Anne Hathaway was pregnant when the marriage license was issued by the Bishop of Worcester on November 27 1582 because his daughter Susanna was baptized in Holy Trinity six months later William and Anne were somewhat less than ardent lovers They only had two more children They were twins named Hamnet and Judith They were baptized on February 2 1585 The boy however eventually did not live Background Home and Environment William Shakespeare was born in Stratford-upon-Avon The house where Shakespeare spent his childhood stood adjacent to he wool shop in which his father had a successful trade as a glover and dealer in leather goods and other commodities Before moving to Stratford sometime prior to 1552 John Shakespeare had been a farmer in the neighboring village of Snitterfield Whether he was able to read and write is uncertain so it is unlikely he encouraged William to pursue
