The Rise And Fall of The Greek Civilization It was nearly 2000 years ago that the Greek civilization ended after Greece became a part of the Roman Empire Despite this their influence on philosophy architecture politics art and language can still be felt today The Geometric period was a time of transformation in the Greek society There was a dramatic increase in population and a more urban lifestyle emerged which brought overcrowding in the cities as well as political tensions The Greeks were forced to expand and so they moved to new lands both in the east and in west where they establish commercial market places and colonies Sanctuaries sacred areas that were devoted to worshiping of deities were developed As the worship of the gods became formalized so the need arose for temples to house the deities statues The Early Archaic era ushered in the development of the polis the Greek city-state which became well developed and flourished This idyllic society unfortunately did not run as smoothly as intended as tyrannical political leaders took control of many of these city-states in the 6th and 7th centuries Greek colonies overseas however continued to flourish and new settlements were established particularly in the territory of the Black Sea Settlements were founded at Mediterranean locations such as Massilia in southern France and Cyrene on the North African coast Well-developed commercial links continued to thrive in Egypt Anatolia and the Levant These contacts motivated a flood of imports from the east and the production of Greek objects with an oriental appearance or featuring oriental motifs Also during this period the first Greek monumental stone sculpture appeared large statues of nude males kouroi and draped females korai were produced as dedications for sanctuaries and as markers for graves These were revolutionary in the manner that they were freestanding and in the round This is also when the Doric and Ionic architectural orders were born allowing the
