The Trails and Tribulations of Joe McCarthy By Mike Gebhart Recent American History 27 November 2001 To sum an epic of a book in a short paper is the slightest injustice I have ever given to the least of things The story as it is put into a likeness of an eight year span of Senator McCarthy from the start to the end of his term makes a great tail McCarthy was antsimatic since his college years spawning an intolerant arrogant politicatian Preliminary to McCarthys advance to the capital his election in 1946 of only 207935 votes over Follete and McMurry brought a radical change to politics Paradoxically the Korean Conflict which lasted from June 1950 to July 1953 created little freedom of information concerns under either Truman or Eisenhower Censorship was kept to a minimum and followed the World War II model of voluntary censorship Military personnel and reporters engaged in the usual battles over the release of certain information but by and large press-military relations reflected the general consensus that journalists should cooperate with the government to withhold vital security information Journalists freedom of information concerns were centered on efforts to obtain nonmilitary information Oshinsky 11 At the same time that growing government secrecy pushed newspapers to ferret out nonmilitary information to which they had previously had open access newspapers faced a separate challenge that also strained government-press relations This challenge was posed by the anti-Communist accusations of the junior United States senator from Wisconsin Joseph R McCarthy His political rise like the growth of the government secrecy in the same era was tied to an increasing Cold War emphasis on national security and forced newspapers to change their practices McCarthy would prove a formidable challenge to the nations editors throughout the early 1950s From his infamous speech in Wheeling West Virginia on February 9 1950 to his censure by his fellow United States senators in 1954 Jack Anderson and
