Dear AdministrationHave you ever heard the saying Monkey see monkey do Children in the 21st century seem to be very influenced by what they see and by what they hear Many believe that the books students read impact their behavior Therefore Hackensack High School wants to ban books such as The Catcher in the Rye by JD Salinger Even though The Catcher in the Rye can come off as a book unsuited for the public it shows a valuable story of hopeThe Catcher in the Rye reassures teens that they arent the only ones facing difficult challenges in their lives The main character Holden Caulfield is a teenager who had recently got expelled from his school Pencey Prep He encounters complications throughout his journey Complications that get him sad depressed and even once in a while get suicidal thoughts These are situations that many teenagers face in todays world Teenagers today face the same problems that Holden did but also have problems such as poor grades in school poverty in the community and association with delinquent peersCart Teenagers behavior is not a result of what books they readIf we start banning books now soon the only books permitted in school grounds would be children books In todays world its hard to find books that meet the no banning criteria Most books today are banned because they contain drugs nudity offensive language racism ALA things that seem unsuited to age group but little did they know that those characteristics develop challenging books that make the mind think criticallyThe main reason why The Catcher of the Rye is one of the most challenged books throughout the nation is because of its strong language but by high school students have been exposed too much worse materials In the novel the author uses words such as bastard goddam hell words that in today society arent seen as curse words Teenagers today are more mature than the teenagers from the
