In this essay I shall talk about how the structure of haemoglobin enables to perform its functions In this essay I shall also discuss what haemoglobin is and what it does where its found what its structure is and how the structure is linked to its function Haemoglobin is a red hemoprotein which is made of heme which gives the red blood cells their colour The function of haemoglobin is to carry oxygen in the blood from the lungs to other different tissues in the body It binds with oxygen in the lungs and releases it in the tissues The role of haemoglobin is to bind with oxygen to form oxhaemoglobin Haemoglobin can be found in the blood within the red blood cells However haemoglobin can be also found outside of the red blood cells Haemoglobin can be also found in plants and fungi One haemoglobin molecule can transport four oxygen molecules The image shows the structureof haemoglobin The coiled structuresare the polypeptide chains the silver ballsare the iron molecules and the goldsurrounding the iron represents haemHaemoglobins quaternary structure is made up of four polypeptide sub units Two are alpha chains and the other two are beta chains To each chain there is an iron containing molecule which is called haem All four sub units together form a haemoglobin molecule Haemoglobin is a globular water soluble protein Haemoglobin contains a prosthetic group haem Haemoglobin consists of a wide range of amino in the primary structure Much of the haemoglobin molecule is wound into alpha helix structures Furthermore the tertiary structure of the sub units is held together by interactions and a number of different bonds These interactions give the sub unit a specific shape which in turn is important for the molecule to carry out its function Furthermore haemoglobin has a unique primary secondary and tertiary structure Each haem group contains a Fe2 ion which the oxygen molecule can bind onto Pictures of HaemoglobinHaemoglobin
