British North America has faced and struggled through many internal and external conflicts and pressures since the capturing of New France in September of 1760 From the Treaty of Paris to the End of Mercantilism and further British North America has managed to find a weak point inside oncoming pressures and avoid the ordeal As the colonies grew forming a method of internal governing became more appealing after the endorsement of the Responsible government act of the early 1800s Keeping in mind as the end of mercantilism arrived new solutions were created to help reimburse the colonies with existing pressures These suggestions had greatly improved the various troubled needs The suggested methods included- Reciprocity interprovincial trade railways inter-colonial to speed up transportation of goods and people American threats and coalitions including the Great Coalition Along with solutions often comes a problem to counter it The structure of this essay is to briefly mention solutions while mainly focusing on political and external pressures leading to the confederation of Canada Evidence based upon resources will identify and prove the pressures facing movement in the government ending with the reason for the most costly pressure When carefully investigating dates following the end of mercantilism Reciprocity was introduced within five-years Trade between the United States and British North America greatly increased as a result Reciprocity roughly states that Canadian trade Nova Scotia Coal New Brunswick Timber Newfoundland Fish and Canadian flour could pass freely across the American border without any tarries duties and quotas A well known quote concedes with the term- you scratch my back and Ill scratch yours In return the Americans received rights to fish in the maritime seas freely In 1865 reciprocity was cancelled The ideal reasons for cancellation were the beliefs of a retaliation from the Americans because of British support to the losing confederates during the American Civil War Also from this the intense external pressure of British ships
