The forest is the place where Hester decided to address Dimmesdale and make it known to him of the true character of Chillingsworth She chose this place since she felt they would need the whole wide world to breathe in while they talked179 and the forest could provide this fresh air When Dimmesdale and Hester first find sight of each other they both stood coldly shuddering in mutual dread186 as they had been so long estranged by fate and circumstances187 They were so used to keeping away from each other in public that to see each other now seemed odd Yet as Dimmesdale places his hand upon hers it already takes away what was the dreariest in the interview187 Not long does it take for the two to release their tensions as they realize that they are free from observation in their present surroundings They begin to talk letting loose such intense feelings and secrets that until now have been buried deep in their souls Happy are you Hester that wear the scarlet letter openly upon your bosom Mine burns in secret188 Dimmesdales quote is the only time that he has divulged his dark secret to anyone and he needed the forest environment to do so freely When Hester reveals that Chillingsworth is only in attendance of Dimmesdale to seek revenge he cries out I must die here There is not the strength or courage left me to venture into the wide strange difficult world alone195 Once he knows that his life has been taken over by the physician he can no longer survive in the Puritan world He feels that he must not leave the forest where he feels safe unless he and Hester go elsewhereWhen Hester agrees to go away with him a glow of strange enjoyment threw its flickering brightness over the trouble of his breast It was the exhilarating effect of breathing the wild free atmosphere of an unredeemed unchristianized lawless
