A group of non-seperatist Puritans belonging to the Catholic church of England believed that their church was corrupt because it was not open to just the visible saints They believed in pre-destiny and thought that only the people destined for heaven should be allowed in the church This group addressed these concerns to the King of England Charles I They told him that they did not want to break away from the church of England they simply wanted to seperate from the impurities The King was open to this idea and in 1629 a royal charter allowing them to settle in Massachusetts was passed In 1630 eleven vessels carrying one thousand people landed in the Massachusetts Bay area They opened a church that was only available for the visible saints One of the main men who came to the MBC was John Winthrop He was like a leader The main form of government in the MBC was theocracy The whole settlement was ruled by men who were members of the church They tried to press Gods rules onto believers and non-believers alike because the Puritans believed that they had an agreement with God to turn the MBC into a holy society The MBC was also like a democracy in some ways The government would hold open discussions among the public and decisions were made on majority-rule The MBC was not a true democracy though because men who were not church members and women all together were not allowed to vote for governor and other positions dealing with the government Also men who said that they had recently been converted would be publicly interrogated Along with being theocratic and democratic the MBC government was oligarchic Since the government was run by only the church members it was in the hands of few people The government was also authoritarian John Winthrop was a very big leader in the church and government The MBC was made up of
