Memoirs of Ashley J Crowther An autobiography of an officer a husband a father a friend A decade has past since I left for battle I could never have imagined how much one war could change so many lives It left its mark both on the field and off the battlefield War is a virus that infects everything in its path humans trees soldiers and civilians It does not care It has no remorse There were times on the field when men wished to be blasted out of existence to escape forever and other times when they hoped it was all a nightmare and they were going to wake up at anytime Sometimes it felt like the lucky ones were the fallen and the unlucky were the living But I knew I had to return It was my destiny to return I had a lovely little boy and beautiful wife waiting for me I look on life from a different perspective My experiences both on and off the battlefield have compelled me to write this short collection of memoirs While at war I missed out on so much of my sons younger years This missed time can never be recovered This is the main reason I have written these memoirs to provide some reasons not excuses for the decisions I have made in the past and to relate some of the events that have shaped my life The early childhood of Ashley J Crowther I believe did not differ much from the male youth of other English families that had migrated to Australia As a child of eleven years I was sent by parents to live with my fathers sister in London England Here I was to obtain my schooling through further cultural studies as my father had and my fathers father had before me and so on After finishing my English schooling I chose to purse my
