Sexually Transmitted Diseases The estimated number of people living in the United States with an incurable sexually transmitted disease is 65 million Every year there are around 15 million new cases of STDs few of which are curable It is because of young age ignorance and most likely embarrassment why these numbers are so high Two-Thirds of STD cases occur in people 25 years of age and younger The college scene has to burden a lot of the responsibility Many of the young adults contracting these sexually transmitted diseases are unaware of the fact they are infected and many of which that are aware are too embarrassed to inform their sexual partner prior to engaging in sexual activity There are two diseases in particular that stand out in my mind when thinking of STDs and those are Genital Herpes and HPV Herpes is caused by the herpes simplex virus or the HSV There are two types of HSV both of which can cause genital herpes HSV type 1 most commonly infects the lips and takes the form of a cold sore or fever blister but can also infect the genital area and cause sores HSV type 2 usually infects the genital area but can also infect the mouth Both HSV 1 and 2 can cause sores in and around the vaginal area on the penis around the anal opening and on the buttocks or thighs Occasionally sores also appear on other parts of the body where the virus has entered through broken skin HSV remains in certain nerve cells of the body for life and can produce symptoms off and on in some infected people Most people get genital herpes by having sex with someone who is having a herpes outbreak This outbreak means that HSV is active When active the virus usually causes visible sores in the genital area The sores release other viruses that can infect another person Sometimes however a person
