Armor Many different kinds of armor were made in medieval times As time went on new on new discoveries and designs helped protect many knights The making of new weapons increased the need for new armor The most basic kind of armor was chain mail Chain mail was made out of small metal links that were formed into a jacket like covering for a soldier When completed the chain mail weighed about thirty pounds Some problems that often occurred with the chain mail was that it got really hot in direct sunlight and sometimes rusted So a protective covering called a surcoata cloth cover was put over the mail to prevent those problems from occurring As more time went on a scales were made These scales were metal plates that were sewn onto the outside of a leather jacket Knights often wore a padded coat under the armor to soften blows given by enemies The word here is soften it still hurt tremendously It wasnt until the thirteenth and fourteenth century that knights started to wear metal plate extensions Plates covered up vital parts of a man Since the knights didnt want to be hurt they decided all parts were vital and thats how we get a FULL suit of armor To put on a full suit of armor would take about an hour with two people working on it The first step was having the knight put on his mail shoes second he would put on his calf protectors called greaves third is buckling the leg protectors called cuisses to his upper leg with leather straps Next the chain mail skirt is tied on to the armor then the padded breastplate and back plate were put on the knight proceeding that the vambraces and gauntlets that protect the hands and arms were put on The final steps were putting on his spurs helmet and shield After all of this he was covered completely
