An Uncertain Reality Henrik Ibsen utilizes the technique of moral ambiguity in many of hischaracters in A Dolls House Ibsen creates these morally ambiguouscharacters in order to display his main theme of the play as well as tocaptivate his audience Nora is the key to this technique for Ibsen in thisplay Ibsen uses Nora to make clear to his audience that the sacrificialrole of women degrades them and makes their situations indecipherable andtheir sense of morality extremely equivocal Nora as the play opens is found coming into the house with manypackages and there is an undressed Christmas tree with her She is veryjovial and tips the porter much more than he asks for Her husband TorvaldHelmer treats her as a child and calls her by cute pet names giving theimpression that she is very submissive while he is very dominant Hescolds her for spending money carelessly Finally Nora shows off what shehas bought to Torvald and it is clear that all was bought with the bestintentions a new suit for Ivar and a sword and a horse and a trumpetfor Bob and a doll and dollys bedstead for Emmy dress lengths andhandkerchiefs for the maids3 It is clear that all of these items arenot for Nora herself but are Christmas gifts for her children and heremployees The only item purchased for herself were macaroons which shemust hide from her husband for he does not approve of such sweets Eventhough she has bought them for herself she is quick to share them with thevisitors which come into her home soon after she has arrived When the visitors arrive the reader is able to understand more aboutNora but much is still
