The Business is a short story written by Jay McInerney It appears in the collection How it Ended which was published in 2009 The story is about a writers struggle for success in the corrupted word of Hollywood The main theme is the conflict of the main characters decisions and view and how he looses his passion and views to the Hollywood world This plot gives of the themes of celebrity Hollywood betrayal corruption narcissism success fame and love The story also gives Jay McInerneys aspects of the modern world Where he uses this person who ends up being emotionally lost in the world Therefore the Business is short story that criticises the western world we are living in and especially the Hollywood world The story is set in USA in the cities of Los Angeles Hollywood and New York Its set in our time and the action stretches over a period of several years The story is told in past tense by a first person narrative McInerney presents several conflicts in the text with the major being the conflict between the main characters actions and beliefs As to that there are a lot of minor conflicts within the major Theses are all kind of conflict there the classic conflict with is the man vs man which is the I vs Brode Then there is the Man vs the circumstances which in this text is the main characters life basically this is a man who keeps getting punched in the face first of all his parents are divorced and lost to him which is seen on page 61 line 18 then he also looses his girlfriend to his best friend This is a conflict you might say he looses because it turns out that the main character is a drinker or even a alcoholic perhaps this is seen several time sin the text an example is line 67 line 9 I matched her drink for
