In the oil and gas industry the determination of hydrocarbon presence and the evaluation of economic feasibility to produce remains a constant challenge It is imperative in the oil and gas industry to properly evaluate the well before production or completion can begin Because of this one of Team 15s primary concerns was to identify the best possible hydrocarbon producing zone within the Sooner Field As such in order to choose a target formation Team 15 analyzed the logs of two offset wells within the Sooner Field Sooner Unit 9-21 and Sooner Unit 20-8-7 The wells logs were made available through the geology and geophysics department at Colorado School of Mines and the locations of the wells are depicted in Figure B1 During the log analysis of the offset wells the following logs were developed to analyze the log data and determine reservoir rock properties gamma ray GR caliper shale volume porosity resistivity water saturation Poissons ratio Youngs modulus overburden pressure normal formation pressure and effective pressure Additionally a neutron porosity NPHI-bulk density RHOB crossplot was developed to better define the lithology The Gamma ray log gave information of natural radioactive material content inside the formation and it was used to find the cutoff and develop a quick assessment of the lithologyThe caliper gave information on how far the logging instrument was from the wellbore and information about possible washout hole bridging and wellbore gauge Volume of shale Vsh was important in determining if a zone was more of a reservoir source or seal rock as the more volume of shale is increased within a particular zone the more likely the zone will be a source or seal rock The volume of shale was calculated using the following equationsLinear Relation based on Gamma Ray Index IGR Equation 1Non Linear Relation Clavier Method Equation 2Non Linear Relation Larionov Method Equation 3The porosity log was utilized to help compare different zones with
