All my life Ive heard the phrase Show me your friends and Ill tellyou who you are However I only recently have understood the depth ofthis phrase One could be subject to guilt by association for lookingshallowly at a friend and only choosing them by their personality WSomerset Maugham objects to that practice He dares to say you could beripped off in friendships by looking at the person from an artificialstandpoint In other words Maugham is discouraging against avoiding tolook deeper into a person for their core morals while being hypnotized bytheir theoretical popularity or athletic ability In my livelihood many a times have I decided to become close with aperson based on their intellectual ability yet this has failed me time andtime again after the so- called friend decides Im not proficient in theircriteria for being smart enough In just the previous year I poured myheart and soul out to a friend I had met a year prior Utterly impressed byhis supreme intellectual ability I didnt see how truly despicable he wason the inside Two months earlier he stopped contacting me because he hadmoved on to bigger and better things with the Mensa society DevastatedI came across this quote and realized my grave mistake I had forgottenMaughams most important principle artificiality is vile at best This can also be used as a metaphor to retail When buying an articleof clothing does the buyer just look at the color and size Or do theyinspect diligently making sure the product is worth its monetary valueAgain Maughams guiding words ring true One must look deeper to seewhether you are receiving what you desire and never fall victim to what maybe a weak facade hiding true darkness To repeat Maugham advises the reader of the quote to look diligentlybefore making a lasting friendship personality is incomparable tocharacter
