What is desire Looking at the definition of desire we see that it is defined as a conscious impulse toward something that promises enjoyment or satisfaction in its attainment Merriam-Webster Dictionary Tennessee Williams play A Streetcar Named Desire revolves around two characters named Blanche Dubois and Stanley Kowalski Blanche is caught between her past reality and her present fantasy Stanley on the other hand already lives in a fantasy world and does not have desire driving him to change his life He only desires to uncover the secrets of Blanches past and to remove her from his home Within the novel Blanches life is evidence of how ones troubled past can in effect lead someone to desire a different path for the future Blanche is brought to New Orleans by Desire that is a streetcar named desire for a better life and to escape her ruined reputation that was made in Laurel Streetcar 15 In Blanches case she has the inability to cope with real life situations and failure to remove herself from the fantasy world she had created for herself She states I dont want realism Streetcar 145 and instead of facing reality Blanche would rather live in her own mind which is her own escape Blanche says to Mitch The dark is comforting to me Streetcar 143 Blanche hides from the light just as she hides from reality Allans death means that the light in her life is gone forever and as a result she prefers darkness and dim candlelight the perfect setting for her make-believe world which brings her no pain regret or judgment Stanley is an animal full of rage and intense hormones a man of habit and structure and only has a few desires in life He lives in a world that consists of him working eating drinking playing poker with the guys and having sex For him there is no line between fantasy and reality because he already has
