Sarah Orne Jewetts A White Heron shows the growth of the femalevoice specifically Sylvias in the world of the man and the moraldilemma The character of Sylvia is written as a young girl in Maineliving with her grandmother in a tiny shack in farmland It is here thatshe learns to take a stand for her own beliefs and comes to anunderstanding of what is expected of her and what she expects ofherself Jewett makes a point to illustrate the scenery painting the littlegirl into that rather than painting the scenery around the girlshowing the reader that the girl while not an intruder is a guest inthe quiet woods That is until a tall young man who carried a gunover his shoulder whistles in her direction and asks whether youthink I can spend the night at your house and go out gunning early inthe morning Sylvia experiences a schoolgirl crush and - as she didntspeak before - says nothing except to frightfully mutter her name whenasked repeatedly It is the schoolgirl crush that almost causes her tobetray her inner voice The stranger is an ornithologist and his goalis to find the legendary white heron that lives in the woods surroundingSylvias house The young girl takes an interest because this man payattention to her teaches her talks to her and she does her ownhunting silently creeping through the woods to try and find thiselusive white heron Its not until the end of the story that Sylvia gains her voiceIts not a voice that rings out through the air its an inner voicethat sounds strongly inside of her and enables her to keep a precioussecret the location of the mysterious white heron This stranger whosename is never given is planning to kill the white heron and onceSylvia has seen the birds beauty its majestic nature she becomesconflicted She comes across the location by accident but once shedoes shes mesmerized and the narrator paints a picture of puresplendor saying
