Glenn Altschuler is a Professor of American Studies at Cornell University He has written several books and is currently the Vice President for University Relations at Cornell University In All Shook Up How Rock N Roll Changed America Glenn Altschuler argues that the emergence of Rock N Roll was a pivotal movement in American history in the 1950s and changed longstanding assumptions on family sexuality and race For the first time in history a music genre opened the door for racial integration This period also shows a generational conflict by pushing sexuality in youth identity Through the use of a wide variety of viewpoints insightful analysis and different sources Altschuler demonstrates how Rock N Roll truly changed AmericaThe emergence of Rock N Roll changed Americas ideology on race In the book the author used Elvis Presley as an icon who blurred the boundaries of segregation Elvis credited African Americans with his rise to fame because they contributed to the development of Rock N Roll The colored folks been singing and playing it just like Im doing now man for more years than I know he told a reporter from the Charlotte Observer in 1956 Nobody paid it no mind until I goosed it up I got it from them Altschuler 30 This shows that if Elvis is not prejudiced his tens of thousands of teenage fans will likely share his view In June of 1956 Elvis attended an amusement park on a night that was designated as colored night 40 By using examples from a best-selling biography Altschuler enhanced his reliability Theres a difference between informing what you know and enriching the story and the author does the latter In this book the author demonstrates both the adults view on Rock N Roll and also allows us a chance to see the youths perspective American teenagers were taught to see blacks as inferior to whites but their perceptions changed as more and more listened to
