One of the hardest things for many people - criminals parentschildren and teachers alike - to do is to admit that they are wrongPride and closed mindedness are all determining factors when it comesto making a important or tough decisions Though some people are moreprone to making decisions that are filled with pride making these pridefilled choices is something even the seemingly greatest of men guiltyof In Sophocles Antigone Creon tries to avoid the consequences of hisactions by making a number of pride-filled irresponsible and unsavorychoices that ultimately wrap him up in a web of pride that he simplycannot get himself out of this illuminates the theme that one who letshis pride drive all of his actions will soon distance himself fromeverything that he has going for himWhen Creon makes the decison to criminalize something as absurd as theburial of a member of the royal family he is only showing his weakmindedness and pride and also subjects himself to the riducule of thecommon people In direct reference to Polyneices Creon says They saythat Creon has sworn No one shall bury him But his body must lie inthe field Sophocles 190 This is the point where Creon beginsdigging his own hole into oblivion and he declares his nephews burialillegal By doing this Creon puts his niece Antigone into a toughsituation should she bury her brother or not When Creon and his sonHaimon are arguing about the execution of Antigone for her burialHaimon lets out this overwhelming surprise to no one else but CreonCreon No no good lives are made so by disciplineAnd nowoman shall seduce us If we must lose Lets lose to a man atleast Haimon You are not in a position to know everything That peoplesay or do or what they feel Your temper terrifies them -everyone Will tell you only what you like to hear But I atany rate
